Museum Development Officer for Hampshire Solent
With a BA in Archaeology, and an MA in Archaeological Heritage Management, I have always been fascinated by what heritage can teach us about our world today.
For four years, I worked as a consultant and helped museums and heritage attractions of all shapes and sizes to plan for, and then realise, development projects. Whether in search of practical solutions such as accessibility planning or feasibility testing or when helping managers communicate with teams, users and non-users, being a consultant has taught me that while every project is unique, the sector shares many challenges.
I then worked as the Museum Development Officer for East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire with a regional lead on interpretation and audience development. Client museums at the time included innovative social enterprises such as the Yorkshire Waterways Museum as well as thriving local history museums run by volunteers, such as Hornsea Museum. On top of sub-regional support, I also worked with my colleagues from the Yorkshire MDO team on important strategic projects such as coordinated museum policies for archaeological collections resulting from development. Alongside my work, I also completed a postgraduate diploma in management.
I was then appointed as the Director for Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens where I worked for three years. Under my leadership, we were able to stop the long-term decline in visitor numbers, return the site to being financially stable and extend our visitor offer. I achieved this by overseeing the re-positioning of the shop, taking catering operations back in house and most importantly, reviving the internal communication processes and policies. Having led a museum, I understand the need to balance strategic and reactive management, and the role which museum development can play in supporting managers' aspirations.
Since then, I worked for a year with international accountancy firm, Mazars LLP, as a statutory auditor and completing my Certificate in Finance, Accountancy and Business at the ICAEW.
I very much look forward to working with you as the Museum Development Officer for Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight bringing both great enthusiasm and practical business skills to this role.
